The work entitled "Contamination
" is about two of today's biggest issues: child abuse in daycare centers and child molestation in Korea. Children are the minorities of our society and they need someone to protect them and guide them. Because of dual-earner couples, children spend more time in daycare centers these days. During that time, they are exposed to abuse and assault by their care workers. Also, there have been so many terrifying cases of child sexual assault. Therefore as an act of healing and erasing these horrible scars and memories, I chose soap as my main material. As I grew older, I began to tend to erase bad memories. So in my work, I made child-shaped soaps and placed them into transparent plastic boxes. And as I poured the water onto the figures, I recorded it. This is a process art.
“Contamination”(오염)이라는 작업은 제목과 상반된 비누가 주재료로 사용되었다. 지난 몇 년간 뉴스에서 가장 많이 들었던 것 중에 하나가 아동 성폭행 및 어린이 집 교사들의 아이폭행에 관한 뉴스이다. 나는 비누를 이용하여 아이의 형상을 만들고 그 아이모양의 비누를 아크릴 투명박스에 설치한 후 물을 절반 정도 채웠다. 아이들의 씻고 싶어도 씻을 수 없는 얼룩과 상처를 치유해주고 싶은 소망을 비유적으로 표현했다. 비누는 천천히 물에 녹아 들어가고 남는 것은 비누 자국과 비누 속의 불순물들 그리고 녹다 남은 비누들이다. 마치 어른들이 어린아이의 영혼과 몸을 파괴하고 남긴 얼룩과 상처처럼 말이다. 이 작업은 과정 중심의 작업으로써 비누들이 실제로 사용되고 닳은 모습들이 그대로 전시된다.그리고 벽면에 영상은 비누에 물을 붓는 장면이 거꾸로 계속 반복 재생된다.
