“The Beauty and the beast” mixed media on aluminum mask, 14x20x7cm (2005)

 

This is a mask which has two sides: ugly and pretty sides. Left side is Barbie’s face and right side is ugly looking face that almost looks ridiculous. I chose Barbie as pretty face due to so called her perfect beauty. By putting two completely different faces next to each other, I wanted to compare the beauty and the ugliness. Also by using metal as a main material, it gives the feel of machinery. The cloth, that covers the rest of head, behind the mask was inspired by Korean traditional mask, Tal.
