“Roots” chopsticks and lighting, dimension variable (2007-08)

 

I stack the chopsticks to build a tall and narrow building-like structure and add roof-like structure on top. The idea of building comes from old traditional Korean house: Ki-ya-gip which means tile roofed house. Korean aesthetic, tradition and nature have been my inspiration and vision. As I process my work, I began to gain more information about my country which has been the foundation of my work. Also I draw the shadow of my installation on the wall and I documented it.

제목에서 보여지듯, 나의 뿌리를 알아야 작가로써, 한국인으로써, 좀더 뚜렷한 정체성을 찾을 수 있을 수 있다고 생각했다. 어린 나이에 캐나다에서 7년이라는 시간을 보내면서 다문화 사회에서 작가로 살아남기 위해서는 새로운 문화를 받아들이기 전에 자기의 것을 먼저 알아야 한다는 것을 깨달았다. 그래서 자연스럽게 한국인으로써의 나의 정체성에 대한 작업을 시작하게 되었다. 한국을 비롯하여 동양국가들에서 음식을 먹을 때 사용하는 도구인 나무젓가락을 주재료로 사용하여, 거기에 한국 전통건축물,한옥 지붕의 반복적인 패턴에서 영향 받아 구조물들을 만들었다. 그리고 이것을 불로 태움으로써 시간성을 표현하였다.
