이 작업은 시리즈 작업으로써 어릴 적 종이로 만들어진 인형 옷 입히기에서 영감을 얻었다. 아름다움의 기준으로 자리 잡은 백인 바비부터 라틴 바비, 동양인 바비, 흑인 바비까지 다양한 인종들의 바비 인형들이 등장한다. 그리고 미니스커트부터 웨딩 드레스까지 다양한 옷을 입고 있다. 종이심의 특성을 살려 앞 뒷면에 모두 이미지를 입히고 작가만의 색깔로 색을 입혔다. 여러 인종의 바비 인형 이미지들 사이로 작가의 얼굴이 등장한다. 아름다움이란 무엇인지, 작가의 어릴 적 추억부터 앞으로 겪지 않은 결혼이라는 주제까지 작가의 다양한 생각들이 들어간 작업이다. 작가는 관객이 직접 이미지들을 맞춰보면서 동심으로 돌아가 보라고 제시해보고자 했다.
This work is part of a series inspired by childhood memories of playing with paper dolls and dressing them in paper outfits. The pieces feature Barbie dolls of diverse racial identities—from the white Barbie that has long been positioned as the standard of perfect beauty, to Latina, East Asian, and Black Barbies. They appear wearing a wide range of clothing, from miniskirts to wedding dresses.
Utilizing the cylindrical structure of paper cores, images are applied to both the front and back surfaces and painted in the artist’s own distinctive color palette. Among the images of Barbies of various races, the artist’s own face emerges intermittently. The work weaves together reflections on what beauty means, spanning from the artist’s childhood memories to thoughts on marriage—an experience not yet lived.
By inviting viewers to physically align and assemble the images themselves, the artist encourages them to return to a sense of childlike playfulness while contemplating socially constructed ideals of beauty.
