Seeing isn’t believing

철학자 데리다는 <눈 먼 자의 기억>이라는 책에서 시력을 잃었을 때 우리는 진짜 진실을 볼 수 있다고 했다. 우리는 보통 우리가 보고 싶은 대로 보고 해석해버리는 경향이 있다. 그래서 내 작업의 한쪽 면은 동공이 존재하고 다른 면엔 존재하지 않는다. 반전된 이미지로 인하여 얼핏 보면 이것이 눈인지 우주의 행성인지 불분명해 보인다. 우리는 우리의 시각에 많은 것을 의존한다. 예를 들어 우리는 눈으로 본 것은 믿지만, 그렇지 않은 것 또는 보이지 않는 것에 대한 불신을 가지곤 한다. 하지만 최근 기술력의 발달에 의해 우리가 눈으로 보는 것들은 아주 쉽게 조작되곤 한다. 이런 사회 속에서 우린 진짜 진실이 무엇인지를 질문해봐야 한다. 평면 작업이지만 양면에 이미지를 입힘으로써 한번에 두 개의 이미지를 관객이 직접 이미지롤들을 돌려 가며 감상할 수 있다.

 

The philosopher Jacques Derrida wrote in <Memoirs of the Blind> that when vision is lost, we may finally begin to see true truth. We tend to see and interpret the world according to what we want to see. For this reason, one side of my work contains a pupil, while the other does not. Through the inversion of the image, it becomes ambiguous at first glance whether the form represents an eye or a planetary body in outer space.

We rely heavily on vision: what we see with our eyes is often believed, while what is unseen—or cannot be seen—is met with distrust. Yet with recent advances in technology, what we see can be easily manipulated. Within such a society, we are compelled to ask what truth really is.

Although this is a two-dimensional work, images are applied to both sides, allowing viewers to rotate the images themselves and experience two images at once. Through this physical engagement, the work invites viewers to reconsider perception, belief, and the instability of visual truth.
